How Porn Affects Your Brain

Back in the olden days, visual pornography was only possible with magazines like playboy and FHM. Then, there were the erotic CDs and movies.

In 2006, all this change when high speed internet porn was introduced. Never-ending supply of streaming hardcore videos was readily available to the masses for FREE.

Being someone that used to watch porn frequently, I can tell you that porn desensitises your brain. At the click of a finger, your brain is exposed to countless of hot girls with full on make-up, fake tits and bubble butts.

But nothing in this world is free. There is always a price to pay.

Unhealthy Amounts of Dopamine

When you watch porn, high amounts of brain chemicals known as dopamine is released. Dopamine is one of the major chemicals that powers the reward system.

It can be referred to as the “craving” neuro-chemical that sends out a message saying “you have to get it now!” This may be food, sex, cigarettes, or your next porn video.

Each time you hop from video to video, you receive a small “squirt” of dopamine. And this is interpreted by the brain as an act that is promoting our survival, even though you know this is not the case.

Gradually, you realised you need longer screen time and more hardcore videos to get off. Simple amateur content no longer satisfy you like before as you require more dopamine to feel the same level of satisfaction.

Therefore, internet porn is like a drug. To make things worse, it is legal and readily available. Just like how obtaining and consuming food is vital for life, sex and reproduction is part of our biological system to spread our seeds and pass down our genes.

That is why sexual stimulation is so powerful as it produces higher dopamine levels than any other form of natural reward.

How powerful you may ask?

The dopamine release experience before sex is comparable to that experience of using drugs such as cocaine or morphine. You are basically hijacking the most powerful driver in your body: the need to reproduce.

That makes an impression on your mind. Thus, watching internet pornography is much more damaging than other internet addictions such as playing video games. The reason being video games does not affect the brain’s innate circuits in the same fashion as watching internet pornography does.

Depression and Anxiety

As your dopamine D2 receptors gets fried from the overconsumption of porn, life loses its colour and gradually becomes boring and dull.

PMO addiction will certainly numb your life and cause depression. You lose your goals and desire/hunger in life, and start feeling even shittier about your state of life compared to your peers. This also creates anxiety as you worry about the future.

You are left with no motivation as you have fapped away all your sexual energy. You become trapped in this vicious cycle and only crave the next hit.

Seeking Novelty

Reward circuits encourage us to engage in novelty. Novelty allowed our ancestors to discover new territories, new resources and new mates.

This also explains why people who watch internet pornography open several tabs in their browser at the same time. Most of you probably don’t watch a porn video to completion, but juggle around over 20 videos before finally finding that one video till the build-up is there and you are ready to release.

Therefore, people surf multiple videos to stimulate their desire for novelty. Thanks to the internet, your mind tricks you into thinking you are successful as you are able to view many potential mates within an hour.

Porn is like a cheat code, but in a bad way

Watching porn is like a cheat code, but in a negative way. In the real world, you have to ask out a girl, text with her, flirt with her, go on dates, make sure you guys are compatible, before she is attracted enough to sleep with you.

However, when you watch porn and fap, you skip all the hard work, and just go to the end. There is no work to be done, nothing to improve on yourself to attract a girl, and therefore the instant gratification you get from releasing your semen is not as satisfying when you actually put in the work and have an authentic relationship with an actual girl.

Ever notice how guilty you felt after watching porn and masturbating? How pathetic is it to watch 2 humans have sex. It is screwed up and harmful for your brain as well.

Desensitisation

Desensitisation involves low dopamine signalling for everyday activities. This is known as ‘reward deficiency’ and ‘numbered pleasure response.’

As you start to engage in porn videos, you will realise you need to watch more and more videos to feel as aroused as in the past. This is because desensitisation in your brain has caused a tolerance to porn.

This also leads to a condition known as Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction (PIED) and is by far the most crushing thing that can ever happen to a man's ego and confidence. Trust me when I say this as I have experienced it first hand for myself when I could not get up in front of an attractive girl.

The addict also requires a higher dose of internet porn to achieve the required dopamine release and associated opioid release. Searching and watching more videos take up a lot of time. Hence, you have less time for your work, school or relationships and they will suffer.

Is it really worth it?
